You’ve probably heard of the Walker Art Center and its famed sculpture garden. But have you been to the Weisman Art Museum? This impressive art collection is a favorite of Twin Cities art lovers, but it’s not commonly known among tourists. It’s a free museum located on the University of Minnesota campus and offers tons of exciting educational programming. Get the facts you need before you visit the Walker Art Center:


Arriving at the Weisman Art Center

If you drive, be prepared to fork over cash to for a spot in the parking structure or circle the block a few times to find street parking. Public transit is probably your best bet.

From downtown Minneapolis, take the northbound 6 bus to campus or the eastbound Green Line train to the East Bank light rail station. From there, the Weisman Art Museum is a quick walk.

You can also access this museum through other transit lines depending on where you are coming from. If you are venturing from St. Paul, you can take the 3 or Green Line westbound to get to the museum.



The Weisman has limited hours, and it is not open on Monday. On Tuesday through Friday, the museum is open from 10 AM through 5 PM (with an extended closing on Wednesday - open until 8 PM). On the weekend, the Weisman Art Museum is open from 11 AM to 5 PM. Check the website before you go. The Weisman is also usually closed on major holidays.



Admission is free for everyone. There are also several free educational events that are open to the public. Guided tours are offered on a complimentary basis on the weekends. These tours often take a deep dive into a particular topic or exhibit.


Viewing the Collection

You can take a self-guided or guided tour through the collection. Fees apply if you’d like to do a guided tour with a large group. The art exhibits are typically longstanding, on view for several months or years at a time. Modern and classical art alike mix and mash as the galleries guide you through a tour of the times.

Book lovers, take note: the Weisman picks seasonal book club selections and then offers guided tours for book clubs that correspond to the reading material. They carefully curate the exhibit to explore themes in the book.
