Rent a hotel

There are many factors to consider when booking a hotel anywhere, but the broader Minneapolis-St. Paul area can be an especially tricky destination to plan for. Known for its geographical spread and eclectic neighborhoods, where you stay can have a dramatic impact on your overall trip. Whether you’re visiting family, meeting a client, or want to explore the city,  there are four main areas to consider before you click ‘Book!’

They say location is everything, and this is especially true in Minneapolis. Although many areas in the city are close to one another, rush hour traffic and parking are no joke. Fortunately, there are many hotels located on or near a bus or light rail stop. You can also use ride-sharing apps if you’re wary of using public transit. Before booking your trip, think about where you will be spending the bulk of your time. If you’re in town for work, where is your client or conference located? While many business travelers choose to stay downtown, others cut costs by staying a little further out. Bloomington is a convenient choice since it is near the airport, but you can still access downtown relatively quickly. Roseville and Shoreview are also great options as both have easy access to the highway, restaurants, and shopping, and both are safe and reasonably priced.

Continental Breakfast

This amenity is not a given at all hotels. Take note of a hotel’s breakfast offering before you make your decision. You can also search for photos and reviews online – what defines a ‘continental’ breakfast can vary widely by the establishment. Many Minneapolis hotels provide a hot breakfast buffet; those who don’t might have an on-site restaurant or café where you can purchase breakfast. But consider what’s offered, how it factors into the overall price of your hotel, and whether other establishments are within walking distance. You don’t want to be stuck paying for an overpriced hotel breakfast because you can’t find anywhere else to go!

Another major factor in choosing a hotel is whether it offers parking. While many have on-site parking, some are constrained by space and escalating downtown rent. When staying downtown, you may end up parking blocks away from your hotel room. And even if your hotel does have parking spots available on the premises, it may be quite costly. Hotels outside of the city center are more likely to offer free parking, and this may end up being a more cost effective solution over the duration of your trip. If you’re in a pinch and don’t want to pay, check out apps like SpotHero or Parking Panda to find more economical parking options near you.

An on-site fitness center is one of the best ways to beat the jet-lag and stay in fighting shape for your trip. To really get the most out of your trip, don’t simply check if the hotel has a fitness center or not. Scope out their website to see pictures of the space to ensure it’s up-to-date and usable. Look for hotels with a spacious workout center, a pool, and if you want to be pampered, spa facilities.
